My favorite basic food to eat while visiting Israel.
* Many places have kosher and vegan options more than many other places in the world. Just make sure to look at the symbols on menus!*
Shawarma
Hummus - smooth and creamy different than Greek that is chunky
Israeli Salad/ breakfasts- Chopped raw tomato, onion, and cucumber, but may also include pepper, carrot, scallion, leafy greens, and parsley. Za'atar (dried herb and olive oil) and yogurt are common dressings at breakfast while sumac and tahini are used for the rest of the day. Dressings are served as an independent dish or within a pita. This healthy breakfast style originates from Kibbutz style breakfasts. Another popular salad is tabbouleh made of parsley and cucumbers-tasty!
Pita bread for sandwiches was made by the Bedouins, a nomadic Arab community living in Israel.
Bamba- Do you like peanut butter and how about Cheetos? Well, you'll enjoy this crunchy snack. I don't love the flavor or texture of peanut butter but you have to at least try it (hopefully you don't have an allergy). This snack is one of the leading foods produced and studies show that Israeli children suffer from peanut allergies at only one-tenth the rate of their Western counterparts because of how popular Bamba is among infants.
Bissli is the runner up after Bamba. Bissli is a crunchy salty snack/chip.
Milky is a special treat! It is chocolate pudding with whipped cream on top.
Schnitzel
Falafel
Shakshuka- A dish of eggs poached in a sauce of tomatoes, chili peppers, and onions, often spiced with cumin. The word comes from the Arabic word, “mixture”. It is typically served in a cast iron pan. It is often a popular morning and evening meal.
Elite chocolate bars. The best one, in my opinion, has Pop Rocks candy mixed within the chocolate bar.
You'll see many juice stands throughout Israel. Pomegranate is a popular flavor. This fruit represents: learning, knowledge, wisdom, and being fruitful. Common to eat on Rosh Hashanah, a Jewish holiday celebrating the Jewish New Year, because it represents fruitfulness.
Aroma Iced cafe or their hot cocoa and they also have great sandwiches and salads (they have a few locations in North America as well).
Rebar- has fresh smoothies
Chocolate milk in a big- If you know, you know. It just somehow tastes better in a bag, although it's not the most eco-friendly packaging.
Krave is a chocolate cereal made by the Kellogg Company.
Rugelach a rolled-up pastry filled often with chocolate
Nothing better than having fresh food at the Shuk, you can pick out candy or spices or a whole meal here!
I am not a big beer drinker but "Gold Star" is popular and so is Tubi 60 another alcoholic beverage. L'chaim- a toast to life!
